Health Care Partnership Supports Local High School Athletes

 
 

TEMPE ST. LUKE’S HOSPITAL PARTNERS WITH TEMPE UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR SPORTS MEDICINE NEEDS

TEMPE, ARIZ. (Aug. 10, 2015) – From training camps to two-a-day practices and conditioning drills, high school athlete sspend countless hours preparing for the big moments – the touchdown, the winning serve, and the game-changing steal. Parents, coaches and school administrators know that these big moments depend on the many little moments spent taking care of these young competitors every day.

That’s why Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital is partnering with the Tempe Union High School District to serve as the officialathletic training services provider for its high school sports programs. Through this partnership, athletic trainerscollaborate with school nurses and coaches and attend many practices and games. They take care of injuries and counselstudents about healthy lifestyles, injury prevention and even sports medicine research and careers.

“Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital is fully committed to helping support our community’s growing health care needs,” said JacobGolich, Administrator of the hospital. “For many years, our hospital has had all of the key elements needed for asuccessful sports medicine program. This partnership with six nearby high schools enables us to package these elementsinto a sports medicine service line designed to support local athletes.”

The six high schools benefiting from this partnership include: Corona del Sol High School, Desert Vista High School,Marcos de Niza High School, McClintock High School, Mountain Pointe High School and Tempe High School.

“The wellbeing of our students and student athletes is a top priority,” said Dr. Anna Battle, Assistant Superintendent forDistrict Operations of the Tempe Union High School District. “The comprehensive resources provided through thispartnership play a vital role in ensuring that our students are safe and healthy.”

As part of this sports medicine partnership, Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital is employing dedicated athletic trainers through itsrelationship with Physician Group of Arizona, Inc.; incorporating a Physical Therapy Department in the Medical OfficeBuilding adjacent to the hospital; and combining the expertise of orthopedic surgeons from the Hedley Orthopedics Institute with local Tempe physicians to provide support to the student athletes.“

Our athletic trainers and physicians emphasize complete fitness – not just rehabilitation from a specific sports injury,”Golich said. “We want to see these young people develop excellent health habits that they will follow for the rest of theirlives.”
